Hyundai Motors has shared its plans of launching six new electric cars in India a few days back. Some of them will be based on their existing petrol and diesel cars. We expect Hyundai could be working on a Nexon EV competition. In this article, we will discuss Hyundai’s electric cars plan and the Nexon EV competition they are planning.

Hyundai’s plan

Hyundai Nexon EV competition

Hyundai Kona electric SUV is the only electric car that Hyundai currently offers in India. Hyundai is expecting a 53 percent growth in the electric vehicle segment by 2028. The brand has revealed its plan related to expansion in the electric vehicle segment. This plan includes a total of six Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) that will include different body styles including sedans and SUVs.

Hyundai’s Platform

iONIQ 5

Hyundai will be planning to launch new electric cars in both mass and premium segments in India. For this, Hyundai will be modifying the existing platform and also use a dedicated E-GMP (Electric Global Modular) platform in India. The E-GMP platform that currently underpins the IONIQ 5 consists of a vehicle chassis that includes the battery, motor and power electric system. The platform will get measurable dimensions that will allow different body types to be built on the same platform. The vehicles built on this platform will boast of a flat floor, spacious cabin, and sleek cockpit.

EGMP platform

The E-GMP platform is based on Modularity, Reliability, Usability, and Performance. The platform is modular means that this single platform will be able to build different body types. This platform will also be reliable to offer a lower center of gravity with Ultra High Strength Steel. This will also offer eight-point battery mounting facilities. The flat floor along with an adjustable seating layout will offer better cabin space. The second row of the vehicle will also get sliding seats.

Hyundai will be working on bigger batteries as well. Battery rating up to 77.4kWh along with two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive systems will be offered. These cars will also offer improved handling and a top speed of 260kmph.

Cars that will see an EV variant

Venue EV

Hyundai is also planning to launch electric cars that will be based on their existing lineup of ICE vehicles. Hyundai has not yet disclosed which of their existing cars will get an electric vehicle variant, but they did say that SUVs will be a focus area.

Hyundai might start their ICE to EV transition with their popular products like Creta or Venue. Currently, the Tata Nexon EV is the highest-selling electric car in the passenger vehicle segment in India. Hyundai Venue electric SUV will be a direct rival to the Tata Nexon EV once its launched. We also expect Hyundai to launch an entry-level electric car that will be based on the Grand i10 NIOS. This could be Hyundai’s most affordable EV in India.
