Mahindra & Mahindra can safely be called the country’s leading manufacturers of SUV’s. Its portfolio includes a range of true-blue SUV’s such as the Thar, Scorpio, XUV500, the newly-launched, TUV300 and the evergreen Bolero. The company currently has a production line for the Bolero in Haridwar that it had established back in 2006. The company is now seeking a consideration on the 30 percent excise duty levied on sports utility vehicles.

Mr Pravin Shah, President and CEO (Automotive) at Mahindra & Mahindra recently met with the Chief Minister in Bijapur to impress upon him that the Bolero is not a luxury vehicle. Therefore, it should not be charged the full, 30% excise duty charged on such category of vehicles.

The Bolero is perhaps the most important SUV in Mahindra’s line-up. It is singularly responsible for changing the image of the manufacturer from being an archaic, utility vehicle brand to one that is willing to move with the times. Over the years, Mahindra has refined the styling, upgraded the mechanicals, introduced new features and improved upon the positioning. Today, the Bolero doesn’t just give a tough fight to other competitor SUV’s but it also makes for a compelling alternative to anyone looking to buy a regular car. Not surprisingly, the Bolero is the unchallenged king of SUV’s in the country, wearing the best-seller crown with aplomb. With the fifth-highest sales figures for cars in the country, the Bolero now in its ninth year of production shows no signs of slowing down.

With the recent Supreme Court order that’s stalled sales of the Bolero in Delhi & the NCR, any reduction in the price of the SUV would only go on to spur sales elsewhere. An excise rebate as requested by Mahindra would allow it to be priced more competitively. It would also help the company to tide over the crisis through increased sales in the rest of the country.
