Maruti Alto has a long history. The car has evolved over a while. In 1983 Maruti started production of the car, back then it was known as the Maruti 800. The car remained in production for around 31 years. In 2014 the Maruti 800 was discontinued as it had aged too much. The 800 was then replaced by Maruti Alto. The Alto did replace the iconic 800 very successfully and to date continues to be a best seller for Maruti Suzuki.

The Maruti 800 was 3335mm in length, 1440mm in width, and 1405mm in height with a wheelbase of 2175mm and ground clearance of 160mm. the car back then had a 796cc petrol engine that produced 37bhp and 59Nm of torque. This car only had a manual gearbox back then. The car was very fuel-efficient with an overall mileage of 14.30kmpl.

What we expect in new-gen Maruti Alto?

The new generation Alto will be based on Maruti’s Heartect platform. The car will get a new 1-litre K10B engine the same that is currently used in the Maruti S-Presso that produces 58.33bhp and 78Nm of torque. The car will be available with a five-speed manual and an AMT gearbox. The interiors of the car will get a newly designed dashboard layout. New AC vents design, steering mounted controls, new seating, and upholstery is also expected in the new generation Alto. The car is also expected to be feature-loaded with all four-power windows, rear wipers, dual airbags, and touchscreen infotainment.

The launch of the new-generation Alto was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and microchip shortage. But recently there are many spy shots in circulation showing a production-ready Maruti Alto. The current price of the Maruti Alto starts from Rs 3.73 lakh and the top-end variant is priced at Rs 5.45 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) Maruti is expected to add a premium of 45 to 55k on the new generation Alto depending on the variants and launch this car in the first quarter of 2022.
