As a part of the global agreement between Suzuki and Toyota, the Japanese carmakers will continue to share technologies and products across various countries. In India, this alliance has given two new products from Toyota. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza based Toyota Urban Cruiser and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno based Toyota Glanza. In this article, we will discuss how Toyota will be helping Maruti Suzuki to manufacture an SUV that will compete against the Hyundai Creta.

The Story so far with Toyota

Toyota Urban Cruiser

Currently, Toyota has the Urban Cruiser in the sub-four-metre compact SUV segment and then they have a full-size SUV, the Fortuner. There is nothing in between that can compete against the C-segment SUV like the Hyundai Creta, and Kia Seltos. While MG has launched the Astor, Skoda has launched Kushaq and Volkswagen has launched Taigun. This has just added two more contestants for the Japanese carmakers to compete with.

Toyota’s role in developing the new SUV

Maruti Toyota SUV

Toyota will be manufacturing the new SUV in collaboration with Maruti and Suzuki. The technology and build quality will be taken care of by Toyota. Currently, Toyota has two plants in Bidadi, Karnataka; one manufacturing the Fortuner and the Innova Crysta and the second plant for Camry Hybrid and the recently discontinued Yaris. Since the Yaris is no longer in production the second plant will now be used to make the new SUV and then handed over to Maruti Suzuki to manage. This new SUV will get the same underpinnings and use Toyota’s DGNA architecture. The designing and styling will differ for both brands to carry their own design language. The engine will be designed and supplied by Toyota. This will help both Toyota and Maruti Suzuki to bring down their economical and production costs. Also, launch a product at a competitive price that will rival the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. This new SUV will help both brands to fill the gap in their product lineup.

How will Maruti Reciprocate

Maruti Service Centre

Maruti Suzuki in exchange for the new SUV will provide its strong service and support network. Currently, Maruti Suzuki has the largest network of service centers and touchpoints. The easily available spares and zero-hassle servicing have been strong points in favor of Maruti Suzuki for ages. This strong network will now be made available to Toyota for its new SUV that will be built in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki. This way both the brands will help each other and grow mutually.
