The batteries and the motor form the two most important components in an EV. Normally the batteries power the motor that causes the EV to move from point A to point B. what happens to the batteries when the EV is not moving? Carmakers are trying to find an answer to this question. they are exploring V2L technology. In this article, we will discuss this technology that can actually make your EV more than just a car.

V2L Technology Explained

Mitsubishi EV

V2L technology is the answer to the question, what happens to the batteries of an EV when it’s not moving or idle for a longer duration. Vehicle-to-load is also known as V2L is a functionality available in today’s new EVs that allows large batteries in the EV to power something external to the car, such as electric appliances.

Benefits of V2L technology

With this technology, you can surely operate a small portable fridge or a small laptop while you are camping with your friends or family. This could even be used during serious situations, including rescue and relief operations during natural disasters or other crises situations. Recently launched Hyundai Ioniq 5 also has this V2L functionality with an output wattage of 3.6kW. With this wattage, you can easily operate a laptop or a mini-fridge. The Hyundai Ioniq5 comes with an adapter that gets attached to the charging point of the EV and on the other end of the adapter you can plug in the power cord of the appliance you need to operate.

V2H and V2G explained

V2H or V2G layout

V2H stands for Vehicle-to-home and V2G stands for Vehicle-to-Grid technology. Both these technologies work on the same concept of power-sharing. In V2H the EV can be used to supply power to a house during a power cut. Similarly V2G the EV can supply power back to the electricity grid from the EV’s battery. The power-sharing is done using a two-way charger that is able to feed current back into the electricity grid.

EV with V2L functionality

Hummer EV

V2L functionality is available in upcoming electric SUVs and pick-up trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer EV, and the Tesla Cybertruck. We hope some cars in India get this tech too!

We can also expect this technology to be seen in EVs in India very soon as the EV frenzy catches up. If you have car buying doubts click here to ask! Get the lowest price for car insurance here.
