Maruti has been in the Indian market for quite some time. It has revolutionized the Indian market with affordable and reliable cars. Being in the market for such a long time, it has sold a lot of cars. But some cars have stood out from the rest. The Omni is one such car that has sold in high numbers. It was in production for over 35 years as a popular transport vehicle. But Maruti had to discontinue it. It was discontinued due to safety and BS6 engine norms. To counter this, Maruti can bring the Omni in an EV avatar. In today’s article, we will discuss the Maruti Omni electric.

Maruti Omni electric- New platform

Safety was one of the biggest concerns with Omni. It had a flat front bonnet with no crumple zones to absorb the force of a collision. It also lagged in other mandatory safety features like airbags, ABS and rear parking sensors. To solve this, Maruti can use Eeco’s platform on the Omni. It would also prove cost-effective, rather than investing in a new platform.

Why in an EV form?

Another issue with the Omni was its engine. Maruti was not able to achieve emission norms on its 0.8-litre petrol engine. So instead of investing in a new engine, Maruti can instead invest it in developing an electric powertrain for the Omni. It can also use the electric powertrain it uses on the WagonR EV. The car also has a long floor which can have the batteries.

Why does it make sense?

Maruti

Maruti had to discontinue the Omni only due to the safety and BS emission norms. It was able to sell 5000-6000 units even in its last months. The Eeco has continued the good sales showing that people prefer this type of affordable mini-vans. Considering the rising fuel prices, bringing an EV avatar would make more sense. The Omni is a huge nameplate and its EV avatar would find a lot of buyers.
