Tata Sumo 4×4 – A dream car
Tata Motors new SUV lineup has contributed a lot to its revival in the sales chart. But in the past too, Tata has had some very good SUVs like the Sierra, Safari & the Sumo. The Sumo was an iconic product for Tata Motors in India. It was a popular people mover. It was even used by government agencies due to its various capabilities. Tata used to offer a 4×4 version of the Sumo specifically for the Indian army. It is a very rare car as a limited number were built. Talking Cars, a Malayalam channel covered this rare Sumo 4×4. History of Sumo
The Tata Sumo was launched in 1994 primarily for military and off-road use in rural areas. It quickly gained popularity, with Tata selling 1 lakh units of the Sumo by 1997. Tata also sold various versions of the Sumo like Spacio, Victa, Gold and Grande. The Grande was the most advanced version of the Sumo. The car was popular due to its rugged and fuss-free ownership experience. Tata had to discontinue the Sumo in 2019 after being in production for 25 years. Tata was forced to discontinue it due to the stringent BS6 norms and low safety.

The Sumo 4×4 shown in the video was brought from a military auction. The owner has put in a lot of effort to maintain the car in this condition. It gets thick cladding on the wheel arches making the car look quite big. The bumpers also get a redesigned look to go with the black cladding. The blacked-out steel rims are also wider and taller than 2WD Sumo. It also has more ground clearance than the normal Sumo.
Tata Sumo 4×4 specifications
The Sumo 4×4 used to come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine capable of producing 92bhp of power. It also got a different suspension than the normal Sumo. The owner has done some modifications to the 4×4 system. Tata used to offer a 4×4 system and automatic hub lockers. The owner replaced them with manual 4×4 and manual hub locks for convenience. It offered great ride quality than competition cars.

The video also shows the interiors, which are quite basic and similar to other commercial vehicles. It got a basic 2-din sound system and a manual AC system. The Sumo 4×4 didn’t get third-row seats as the normal Sumo.
