Why will Tata do it?

Currently, Tata has no presence in the affordable MPV segment. But in the past, Tata had a very reliable car in this segment, the Sumo. The Sumo and Safari were the main products for Tata Motors. Sumo was the affordable 7-seater, while Safari was the premium 7-seater. Considering, Tata has brought back the Safari nameplate. We can also expect Tata to bring back the Sumo nameplate. This Tata Sumo new model can easily fit into the affordable MPV segment. If done properly, it can even compete with the Maruti Ertiga.

Problems Tata is facing

This is a bit difficult for Tata. Currently, it only has two new platforms: the ALFA architecture and the OMEGA platform. The problem is that the ALFA architecture can’t be made bigger. The MPV has to be at least 4.2m in length to be a proper 7-seater. The OMEGA architecture can be ideal for Sumo. But the problem is it is derived from Land Rover’s D8 architecture, which is on the expensive side. This will restrict Tata from pricing the Sumo competitively.

The Tata Sumo was a capable people mover. It was launched in 1994 primarily for military and off-road transport purposes. It quickly gained a lot of takers with Tata selling 100,000 Sumo’s in the first three years. Tata also launched various versions of the Sumo like the Spacio, Victa, Gold and Grande. The car was especially popular among fleet customers due to its rugged and functional use. Tata had to discontinue the car in 2019 after being in production for 25 years. It was discounted due to stringent BS6 norms and its low safety.
