Mahindra & Mahindra at looking at expanding its present product portfolio and adding variants to its line-up. To cater to a new set of customers, Mahindra will be launching the petrol version of the Scorpio in India. This petrol engine will be a 2.2-litre unit and may come with a 4×4 option too.

Mahindra is currently manufacturing the petrol version of the Scorpio, however is exporting it to Africa and Middle East. Dr. Pawan Goenka did point out the fact of launching the petrol version of the Scorpio in India. The 2.2-litre turbo petrol engine churns out 156bhp of peak power at 4,500rpm while peak torque is rated at 280Nm.

The other engine on offer is the 2.0-litre petrol for the XUV500. Mahindra is already exporting that to other markets and it will be launched for the Indian car market. Most of the Indian car buyers do not prefer a petrol engine for an SUV of this size and hence they haven’t done that well. Mahindra is ramping up the production of the Scorpio and XUV500 petrol so these can be an alternative if diesel as fuel will have excess duty or stopped for new cars.

Most of the Mahindra products have diesel engines that are in excess of 2000cc, and it will be one of the biggest suffering brand with this ban. At the moment it has the Verito and the TUV300, which are under 2.0-litre. Now, the KUV100 will be another new product that will be added to it.
