Mahindra planning a new Toyota Fortuner killer?

In India, the SUV segment is expanding rapidly in the Indian market. There is demand for all types of SUVs, right from compact SUVs to full-size SUVs. Though demand for full-size SUVs is lower, it still is a popular segment. This segment is ruled by the Toyota Fortuner, now with the discontinuation of the Ford Endeavour, it has no serious competition in this segment. But the upcoming Thar 5-door might challenge the Fortuner.  In today’s article, we will see about this upcoming Mahindra Fortuner competition.

From the front, the 5-door Thar will look identical to the 3-door Thar. It will get the traditional Mahindra grille with the new twin-peaked logo.  The Thar 5-door will get a rugged design which will help it to take on the Toyota Fortuner.  It may get new bumpers and a new headlight design. From the sides, the car will look extended due to the additional row. The rear will also get some new elements. In the interiors, it will get major changes due to the extra space.

Specifications

The 5-door Thar will be around 4500mm, which will be very close to the Fortuner’s length. Width and height will be similar to the 3-door Thar. Engine-wise it will get the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine. Specs-wise the petrol engine is on par with the Fortuners engine. Coming to the diesel engine, Mahindra might offer it with the tune of the XUV700 to compete with the Fortuner. Gearbox options will include a manual and an automatic gearbox option.

 The Thar comes with a decent amount of comfort features. So the Thar 5-door will carry forward most of the features. It will continue with features like cruise control, wireless connectivity, touchscreen infotainment and LED DRLs. Additionally, it will get features like connected car tech, third row AC vents and charging spots and a reverse parking camera.

Pricing and launch

Mahindra will look to price the 5-door variant competitively to take on the Fortuner. It is expected to start from Rs 25 lakh. At this price, it will be a worthy competitor to the Fortuner. It is expected to be launched in 2023.
