MG Motors is gaining popularity in India with its cars like the Hector, Hector Plus, its full-size SUV Gloster and newly launched Astor. They also have an electric vehicle – the MG ZS EV. MG entered the electric vehicle market quite early and gained the early mover advantage. The car competing against the MG ZS EV was Hyundai Kona. Both Kona and ZS EV are priced above Rs 20Lakh. The Nexon EV from Tata Motors, is comparatively a budget-friendly option that is now very successful. MG is also planning to bring in an affordable electric vehicle. In this article, we will discuss the MG Nexon EV rival and try to explore the possibilities that it could offer.

SUVs to buy under 30 lakhs

Design

MG will try to place this new EV against Tata Nexon EV. Therefore the car will be a sub-four meter compact SUV. Currently, the Nexon EV is the only car in that segment and has no competition.  Tata Tigor EV comes under a compact sedan and Mahindra eXUV300 is yet to be launched. MG will make sure that the competition is fierce.

Specifications

MG might use the same powertrain that is currently used in ZS EV. We expect the car to get a 44.5KWH hi-tech battery that might churn out less power than what it produces for ZS EV – 141bhp and 353Nm of torque. MG could boost its range to be around 420km or even more (the real-life figures may differ depending upon actual usage).

Features

MG will continue to keep the basic features of the ZS EV in the new EV. However to keep a check on the cost they might not include features like a panoramic sunroof and MG’s Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). Safety features will continue to be the same as ZS EV. The car will be equipped with six airbags, three-point seat belts for all passengers, ABS with EBD, ESP, brake assist, hill start assist, hill descent, and tyre pressure monitoring system. All four wheels get disc brakes on the new EV from MG as well. The MG ZS EV managed to score five-star safety ratings at the Global NCAP test.

Pricing and Launch

MG is expected to launch this new EV by 2023. The delay in its launch is caused by the COVID situation and microchips shortage. The MG Nexon EV rival will be priced somewhere between Rs 16 lakh to Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom).
