We had said this January, and now Hironao Ito, Senior Vice President at the Honda Genbetsu India, which is the company’s R&D arm has stated that the Japanese automaker is looking at making a new India-specific car. Honda will be developing a small car just above the Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon.

This new car will be developed at Honda’s India R&D centre. India at the moment is the fifth largest car market in the world and the Japanese car maker will want to take complete benefit of this. Ito mentioned to Reuters, “”Some specific model for India is necessary”, though he didn’t state which car will it be.

The new car that is being developed is the new-generation Honda Brio. The new Brio will be powered by a new-generation 1.2-litre petrol and an all-new 1.1-litre diesel engine. This new diesel engine will be the three-cylinder version of the 1.5-litre i-DTEC that is already powering the Honda Amaze and the City.

The new-generation will get premium interiors and will be feature-loaded. Honda’s Brio didn’t do that well in terms of interior styling and this will be taken care in the new one. The new Brio’s boot space will be larger than the current one. The new Honda Brio will be one of the most spacious hatchbacks in its segment.
