With the buzz going on around the banning of diesel cars in New Delhi, the Supreme court of India has ruled that it could ban diesel cars and SUVs with engine capacity of more than 2000cc. The ban will be in effect for three months from January.

Earlier, the NGT had ordered to stop the registration of all diesel cars in Delhi till January 6, when the next hearing has been scheduled. The tribunal had also asked central and state government to stop buying diesel cars in Delhi.
Jnaneswar Sen, Senior Vice President, sales & marketing, Honda Cars India said, “Such a sudden changes will impact the industry a way a that it creates confusion and uncertainty in the minds of buyers. There should be comprehensive study on the sources of pollution.”

Luxury car manufacturers who sell diesel cars with mostly a capacity more the 2000cc or 2.0- liters, will be at the receiving end go this decision by the apex court. NGT had earlier issued notice to Delhi government, Ministry of Environment and to Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises on plea of car dealers seeking modification of order banning registration of new diesel vehicles.

The Supreme court has also ordered a ban on the entry of trucks registered before 2005 in the Delhi / NCR area and increase the cess on trucks entering Delhi.
