August 2021 saw two new contestants enter the arena of the electric scooters in the country; the Ola S1 and the Simple One. With these new scooters coming in, the expectations from well-known brands to get in their popular scooters in an electric avatar have been raised. Activa has been a popular name in the ‘gearless’ scooter world for many years now. The scooter has been around since 1999 and has seen over six generations. In this article, we will discuss our expectations from the Honda Activa electric scooter.

Can the Ola S1 challenge the Honda Activa?

Same dimensions

Activa Electric

Honda will try to continue the same design for the electric version of Activa. Changing the look might change the identity Activa has currently on the minds of the Indian masses. So, in order to make it more relatable to the currently available Activa, there might not be any major design changes. The Electric Activa will share the same dimensions and could be a bit lighter than the existing Activa. The Electric Activa will get all-LED headlamps and indicators. We expect the electric scooter to come with disc brakes in the front as well as in the rear. The instrument cluster will be fully digital with Bluetooth connectivity as these features are becoming standard in electric scooters these days.

Detachable Battery

One major feature that we all expect from the electric Activa is to have a removable/swappable battery. Making it easy to charge and convenient to carry, instead of carrying a really long charging cable that stretches all the way from your home to where you park your scooter. Also with a removable battery, we expect decent under-seat storage to fit in a full-face helmet. Currently, none of the electric scooters offers such space for storage.

Long-range

With Simple One coming in, the range expectations have just gone up. Simple One has a range of 236km with its 4.8kWh battery as claimed by the manufacturers. We expect Honda to offer a bigger battery and a longer range. With the technology and the ability that Honda has, this seems a feasible task for them. Even the existing Activa was popular because of its mileage and ease of handling. Honda will try to provide a range of 250km or more in order to attract more buyers.

Price

We expect Honda to position its Electric Activa competitively. The prices will thus be similar to that of Ather 450X, TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak electric. The launch date is not yet confirmed but we hope they enter the market soon. With major players like Honda entering this segment, the EV ecosystem will develop at a much faster pace in the country. The two-wheeler market is getting new electric scooters rapidly. Its high time that well-known brands like Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha should enter the electric scooters market and introduce their products.
