Tata Motors has officially unveiled its much-anticipated micro-SUV. This micro-SUV was speculated to be named HBX or Hornbill, but Tata has named it ‘Punch’. Micro-SUVs will offer an SUV-like feel in a more compact and affordable package. We already have a fair amount of information regarding the Tata Punch due to its timely sightings. In today’s article, we will be looking at the Tata Punch that has been revealed today.

Tata Rs 9 lakh Creta competition SUV in the works

Tata Punch design

Tata Punch

Punch is the first SUV from Tata to be based on the ALFA-ARC platform. It will be carrying forward the brand’s ‘Impact 2.0’ design language. The headlight setup is similar to the Harrier and Safari. The car gets eyebrow DRLs with the main headlight cluster placed below. The front grille and bumper carry the signature tri-arrow elements, similar to Nexon. The car does get muscular fenders in order to maintain the SUV appeal. Also, the C-pillar mounted door handles have been borrowed from Altroz. The Tata Punch will come with stylish diamond-cut alloy wheels.

Specifications

The Tata Punch will be powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated engine. This engine also powers cars like the Tiago and Altroz in the Tata lineup. Tata might re-tune the engine for the Punch to extract more power. Gearbox options will include a manual and an AMT gearbox. We also expect Tata to bring 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine for the Punch, similar to the Altroz. This turbo-petrol engine along with a manual gearbox might come with a DCT gearbox as well. We don’t expect a diesel engine to be brought for this SUV due to the dimension constraints.

Features

As the Punch will be targeted to a younger audience, it will come loaded with features. A 7.0-inch floating touchscreen, semi-digital instrument cluster, steering mounted controls, adjustable headrests, premium sound system and D-cut multi-function steering wheel will be offered with the Punch. A basic version of Tata’s connected car tech (iRA) is also expected. On the safety side of things, it will get dual airbags and ABS with EBD as standard.

Pricing & Launch

We expect the Tata HBX to start somewhere around Rs 6 lakh. With this pricing, it will be able to take on a product like Maruti Ignis. We expect Tata to competitively place the variant line-up for the Punch in terms of pricing. It will also rival cars like the new Maruti Celerio and the upcoming Hyundai Casper. With the car now officially revealed, we expect it to launch in the coming weeks, somewhere around the festive season.
