MG has been aiming to launch a new product in the country for quite some time now. The product will be a petrol counterpart of its ZS EV, which will be called the Astor. Although the brand has not unveiled the Astor completely, the ground-breaking technology that it will come with has finally been unveiled. The brand has laid out in detail, its DriveAI technology package. With this, MG would be aiming to take on competitors like Hyundai and will compete in the C-SUV segment, which is dominated by the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The brand in its communication has said that the car is a mid-size SUV, which would mean competing with cars like Hector, Harrier and Tucson. Will that be the case? In terms of size, we don’t think so. In today’s article, we will see this Rs 10 lakh SUV.

The MG Astor is the petrol version of the ZS EV. The brand has given subtle changes to differentiate the two. The Astor will get a redesigned front with slimmer full-LED headlamps, a new hexagonal grille and chunkier bumpers. This can all be seen with the car’s front being teased. The rear will also get LED tail lamps, a prominent faux skid plate and new bumpers. The car will also get a new alloy wheel design. The Astor will get a floating touchscreen infotainment system, new buttons for the centre console and separately adjustable headrests for every passenger will be some of the differences. The multi-function steering wheel will directly be borrowed from the ZS EV.

MG will most likely offer the Astor with only petrol engines. The expected engine options are a 1.5-litre petrol engine capable of producing 118bhp & 150Nm of torque. The other engine is a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine that will make 161bhp & 230Nm of torque. The Astor will come with manual and automatic transmission options. MG might offer hybrid options like the one it offers on the Hector.

Launch and pricing

MG will probably launch the Astor by the end of 2021. The car has been spotted testing multiple times, hinting towards an imminent launch. The Astor is expected to start from Rs 10 lakh (on-road). With all this technology and aids, we think the car could be more expensive too as features that are available here are not offered on cars two segments above as well.
