The Mahindra Thar has been the automaker’s one of the most loved and successful products in the Indian car market. With the generation update, the 2020 Thar has bagged more than 60,000 bookings and a waiting period that stretches up to a year. For some buyers who want a practical car, the 3-door body style Thar is clearly not the best choice for them. Keeping this in mind, the manufacturer has greenlighted a more practical and conventional 5-door version of its bestseller, which is expected to make an entry in the market by 2023. Dimensions
As the 3-door version of the off-roader targets the audience who look out for lifestyle or secondary vehicle, the 5-door Thar will be more inclined towards practicality with respect to the market. The 5-door Thar will serve a longer wheelbase than the in-market version. According to the reports, it will be 22% longer than the 3-door variant whose current length is 3,985mm and the wheelbase measures around 2,450mm.

The 5-door version will be based on the same platform as that of the 3-door SUV, however, the upcoming Thar will be longer. Moreover, it will get a split tailgate design, 18-inch alloys, exposed door hinges and an off-road gearbox, similar to the 3-door Thar. We expect to see some changes done to the interior. Elements like a second-row bench seat, rear AC vents, armrest and charging ports will be added. The car will use the upcoming Scorpio’s underpinnings.
5-door Thar features
The upcoming Thar is most likely to carry all the existing features from the existing model like LED DRLs, a touchscreen infotainment system, smartphone connectivity via Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, cruise control, etc. However, we can expect the 5-door version to have added features like wireless phone connectivity, connected car technology, 12V charging sockets and a reverse parking camera.
Specifications
Mechanically, the 5-door Thar SUV will be getting the same engine and gearbox options that are being offered with currently available Thar; a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, which come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. However, it will borrow some suspension elements from the upcoming Scorpio, given the latter opts for a better comfort-focused suspension setup.
Launch timeline and pricing
The much-talked Thar is expected to hit the showrooms by 2023. As far as the pricing is concerned, it is bound to increase. We expect the Mahindra Thar to cost somewhere around Rs 1 lakh more than the in-market 3-door version.
