Maruti Suzuki had launched an upmarket version of its MPV, Ertiga in August 2019, called the Maruti XL6. The XL6, as the name suggests, is a six-seater MPV based on Maruti’s Heartect platform. Although the XL6 has been doing great sales in the Indian car market, its premium appeal is not offered in a seven-seater version. In this article, we will talk about whether the automaker is considering launching a seven-seater version of XL6 in the Indian market which would probably be called the Maruti XL7.

Dimensions and exterior

Maruti XL7

Based on Maruti’s Heartect platform, the carmaker has recently launched the XL7 in Indonesia. With respect to the dimensions, the MPV measures around 4,450mm in length, 1,775mm wide and 1,710mm in height. The XL7 has a wheelbase of 2,740mm with a ground clearance of 200mm. On the other hand, the India-spec Ertiga is 4395mm in length, 1735mm in width and 1690mm in height. Considering the above figures, the XL7 clearly scores a point, as it is longer and will provide a spacious cabin to the occupants. The XL7 sports a muscular chrome front grille,  garnished front bumper, automatic LED DRLs and headlamps, turn indicators on ORVMs (as standard) and chrome finished door handles among others.

Moreover, the XL7 offers a boot space of 803 litres, with rear seats folded.

Maruti XL7 specifications

Mechanically, the XL7 is expected to remain the same for its Indian version. The MPV will feature the same BS6-compliant 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that produces 103bhp & 138Nm of torque and can be had with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing and launch timeline

There have been no reports officially from the carmaker about the launching of the XL7 in India, however, there are chances that the XL7 could be seen on our roads and the car is expected to be priced around Rs 10 – 12 lakh (ex-showroom).

Maruti Celerio revealed ahead of launch

The only seven-seater MPV from Maruti Suzuki is the Ertiga, which although offers a decent space but misses on the upmarket feel which the XL6 clearly wins on. For buyers who are looking for a seven-seater Maruti MPV and that too with upmarket, rich-looking interiors, the XL7 can be their best bet over the XL6 or the Ertiga.
