The new-generation Mahindra Thar was launched last year and has been a popular car ever since. The Thar, though known for its macho looks and strong road presence has evolved into a much more complex package in its latest generation. The car is now known for various other elements and is not just limited to capabilities. As of now, the Thar is only available as a three-door. Keeping that in mind, today’s article will deal with whether a family of two should buy the Mahindra Thar?
The Thar has ample space in the cabin. It can easily accommodate four people. However, with only two people intending to use the car, the rest of the space can be used as boot space. Moreover, Mahindra Thar offers flat-folding 50:50 split rear seats. This will allow you to carry as much luggage as possible.
The Thar being an off-roader though doesn’t compromise on safety. It has a four-star crash test rating from Global NCAP, which is quite good for a lifestyle SUV. It also comes with a host of active and passive safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, panic breaking signal, hill assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), brake assist and brake locking differential. With safety now covered, it becomes a confidence-inspiring car for people who love driving.
The previous-generation Thar was bare-bones when it came to features. Mahindra addressed this by loading the new generation Thar with multiple features. It comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a four-speaker sound system, adjustable headrests, automatic climate control, cruise control, BlueSense app connectivity, voice control, keyless entry, alloy wheels and rear parking sensors. With modern features, the car does not feel old-school, making it suitable for new-age couples.
The Thar comes with powerful petrol and diesel engine. The 2.0-litre petrol engine produces 150bhp and 300Nm of torque. The 2.2-litre diesel engine produces 130bhp and 300Nm of torque. The Thar comes with a manual and a torque converter gearbox. It comes with an all-wheel-drive option helping it transverse a wide variety of terrains. The Thar, due to its off-road capability, comes with a ground clearance of 225mm as well.
The pricing of the petrol variant of the Thar starts from Rs 15.37 lakh and goes to Rs 17.83 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). The pricing of the diesel variants starts from Rs 15.87 lakh and goes to Rs 18.42 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). With the car costing under Rs 20 lakh, it should fit under the budget target of a wide class of buyers, especially a family of two.
