The United States of America had launched an investigation to determine, how the terror group ISIS is acquiring large numbers of Toyota’s SUVs and pickup trucks. The US Treasury, which monitors transfers and the flow of goods, officially asked Toyota – how Islamic State group militants had gotten so many shiny new pickup trucks? SUVs and pickup trucks armed with a 50 caliber machine guns were spotted in ISIS’ propaganda videos several times whereby, noticing this even US Treasury’s Counter-Terrorism unit has inquired as to why this brand is popular in those circles.

The LC300, the new SUV from the carmaker, has already bagged 20,000 pre-orders in Japan. How Toyota will help fight terrorism is by making the Land Cruiser 300 Series buyers in Japan commit to not reselling their cars within 12 months of purchase as a sign of cooperation with inquiry, in order to stop them going into the hands of terrorist groups like ISIS. The sales data of Toyota in the Middle East suggests that the number of Hilux and Land Cruiser sold grew three times from 6,000 in Iraq in 2011 to 18,000 in 2013.

Moreover, in response to the inquiry, Toyota USA issued the following statement: “Toyota has a strict policy to not sell vehicles to potential purchasers who may use or modify them for paramilitary or terrorist activities, and we have procedures and contractual commitments in place to help prevent our products from being diverted for unauthorized military use. However, it is impossible for any automaker to control indirect or illegal channels through which our vehicles could be misappropriated, stolen or re-sold by independent third parties.”

They also added, “We are committed to complying fully with the laws and regulations of each country or region where we operate, and require our dealers and distributors to do the same. We are supporting the U.S. Treasury Department’s broader inquiry into international supply chains and the flow of capital and goods in the Middle East.” Officials of the U.S. Department of Treasury have said that they are working closely with foreign counterparts and stakeholders to solve the mystery surrounding the large numbers of Toyota vehicles operated by ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
