Tesla is gearing up for its debut in the country which is expected to happen in the near future. The EV major is one of the biggest brands in its league. Tesla started production of its first car, the Roadster back in 2009. The Roadster was a performance-focused machine. Tesla then moved on to producing cars for the mass market. This led to the market seeing cars like Model S, Model X, Model Y and Model 3. As of today, the Model 3 is the most affordable Tesla that an individual can buy. This resulted in the Model 3 becoming the world’s all-time best-selling plug-in EV. The brand has sold more than 8 Lakh units of the Model 3 in a span of close to 3 years.
In 2020, the company also surpassed the 1 million mark in terms of EVs produced. This clearly shows the prowess of the brand which India will get to experience. Looking at the huge business potential, governments of various states have come forward to lure the EV giant to set up a base in their respective states. In today’s article, we will look at the Tesla India factory and which state has what to offer to them.
What progress has Tesla made for its stint in the country?
In January this year, the brand had its first officially registered in Bengaluru. This will be an R&D unit that will initiate the India operations of Tesla. Karnataka’s CM B. S. Yediyurappa also confirmed that the brand will set up a production facility in Karnataka. Along with these, the brand is setting up its India HQ in Lower Parel, Mumbai. Tesla has already hired top officials in the country to kick start its business here. David Jon Feinstein, Vaibhav Taneja and Venkatrangam Sreeram are said to be the three directors. Tesla has also appointed Country HR Leader, Policy & Business Development Head and Charging Manager.
What is currently happening?
States like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka have opened their gates for the American brand to set up its factory. The brand was earlier in talks with the Maharashtra government as well, however, the government has not received any further correspondence from Tesla to date. Now, in a recent development, the Gujarat government has offered 1000 hectares of land to woo Tesla to set up its factory in the state. The land is based in Mundra near the Kutch coast and the government is offering it free of cost. Mundra Port (Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones) is India’s largest commercial port and the Gujarat government is aiming to make Mundra an EV hub. Setting up the Tesla India factory would really push this plan, which the Gujarat government would not want to miss.
