Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series – Should India get it?

The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series is considered one the most indestructible, bold and steadfast car line-ups ever. The vehicle has stood the test of time and has been the most preferred 4×4 vehicle in South Africa for more than 60 years. Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Engine
Three engines are offered on the Toyota Land Cruiser 79. Two of them are diesel engines whereas there is only one petrol engine on offer. The smaller diesel engine is a four cylinder 4.2-litre that makes 126 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. The petrol engine is a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated V6 engine. This makes 227 bhp of power and 360 Nm of torque. Lastly, the bigger 4.5-litre V8 diesel engine makes 202 bhp of power and 430 Nm of torque. The V8 engine has a top speed of 160 km/h. Along with these engine variations the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series is offered with the option of the single cab all double cab on the V8 diesel and petrol variants.
Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Design
Land Cruiser 70 has a very basic design but it is quite timeless. This pickup truck features the iconic Land Cruiser single ribbon design grille at the front. The bonnet is quite flat and the overall design of the vehicle is boxy. It has a bumper that is placed quite high and the fog lamps are integrated into the bumper. Depending upon what variant you pick the size of the flatbed changes. There is a spare wheel that is mounted on the back of the Cab and this makes it easy to access. The very noticeable feature of the V8 is the snorkel that comes standard.
Safety
Don’t get fooled by its old looks, The Land Cruiser comes with basic safety features that you get on entry-level hatchbacks. It gets two airbags as standard. This has a front disc and rear drum braking setup. Other safety features include an antitheft system, child lock, wireless door lock and rear window demister.
Dimensions
In terms of dimensions, the 70 series is 5095 mm long. It has a ground clearance of 235 mm And the approach angle is 36°. The departure angle is 27° and the overhang is 710 mm. The Land Cruiser sports a wheelbase of 3180 mm. This pick-up truck has a height of 1955 mm.
India?
Toyota has no plans to discontinue the Land Cruiser 70 series. According to them have become important because of the high torque levels which are required in heavy-duty trucks which is exactly where the Land Cruiser excels. The only replacement that could happen in the future is if an electric alternative is introduced by Toyota for the Land Cruiser series. If we look at the price of this vehicle it is more expensive than the Toyota Fortuner. Also, there isn’t awareness about the legacy of this vehicle in India and the simple and basic design at that price would not be appreciated. We think that Toyota Hilux makes more sense as it is a modern offering. Also as the Hilux is based on the Fortuner platform it would be easier to manufacture in India. Lastly, the brand already has plans for getting the Hilux to India.
