Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has taken a step forward in the direction of establishing a renewable energy ecosystem. With a vision to make India the largest exporter of clean source energy solutions, Mukesh Ambani unveiled RIL’s plans of stepping foot into new energy and new materials business. The company will invest Rs 75,000 crores over a course of 3 years and has already started work on developing the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex on 5000-acres in Jamnagar. Today’s article will deal with Reliance Fuel Cell Giga Factory, its stepping into other ventures and how could it be beneficial for carmakers.

What will constitute this ecosystem?

RIL is looking to enable 100GW of solar energy by 2030. This will be made possible via rooftop solar and decentralized solar installations in villages. However, the biggest game-changer for this will be a storage entity that will supply power during the night when solar energy cannot be used to generate electricity. RIL has thus come up with another initiative, an Advanced Energy Storage Giga Factory. The company is looking into advanced electrochemical technologies in order to develop large-scale grid batteries. The batteries will become the medium to store the energy created by the solar cells. The Advanced Energy Storage Giga Factory will produce these large-scale grid batteries.

The brand is also looking to develop an Electrolyser Giga Factory. This factory will be used to manufacture highly efficient modular electrolyzers. These electrolyzers will be used for the electrolysis of pure water which in turn will generate green hydrogen. Green hydrogen can prove to be crucial in reducing emissions since it is a clean energy source that leaves no harmful pollutants behind. The last initiative from the company under this ecosystem is to develop a Fuel Cell Giga Factory. Fuel cells are said to be the future of power production in automobiles in the coming time. Fuel cells, similar to the other mentioned energy sources, leave no harmful by-products, which is ultimately beneficial in boosting the reduction of emissions. Fuel cells not only find application in automobiles, trucks & buses but are also used in powering data centres, telecom towers, emergency generators and microgrids & industrial equipment.

How could this be beneficial to carmakers?

With a large-scale fuel cell factory now in the making, it could prove to be really beneficial for carmakers as well. If they decide to make fuel cell powered cars, they would not have to search for the technology anywhere outside. Also, a business within the country would be significantly economical when compared to importing the resources. We hope carmakers utilize the opportunity once the infrastructure is ready.
