Mercedes-Benz has finally launched its new S-Class in the country today. The S-Class has been the epitome of luxury sedans in the world. The new one was even declared the ‘2021 World Luxury Car of the Year’. For India, the car will come via the CBU route with 150 cars coming in the first batch. Mercedes has claimed that more than 50% of the units from the first batch have already been booked even before the car made its debut in the country. New exterior design

Mercedes-Benz has given the S-Class a completely new look in its latest iteration. The car with its external styling cues now looks sportier than ever. It gets sleek headlamps and tail lamps which are in line with the other latest offerings from the brand. The S-Class also gets the brand’s innovative digital LED headlamps. Mercedes has also moved ahead with split tail lamps, something the brand had not done in ages. Other than this, the car also gets seamless door handles which give the exterior design a uniform flow. Mercedes claims that the new S-Class is now one of the most aerodynamic car present in the world, especially in the luxury sedan segment.

Sporty AMG Line inspired design cues

The S-Class for India will come with the brand’s AMG Line inspired design cues. The car will get a sporty front wing with elements finished in chrome, rear diffuser, 20-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels and a few others on the outside. On the inside, the S-Class will get a multifunction sports steering wheel, AMG pedals and floor mats.

Enhanced comfort

The S-Class being a luxury sedan now comes with enhanced comfort features on the inside. The front seats get up to 19 motors that will help find the best seating position for the passenger. The seats also get 10 different massage programs which make for a refreshing travel experience. The interior is finished in Nappa leather which makes the in-cabin experience more luxurious.

New 2nd-gen NTG7 MBUX

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class now gets a total of 5 screens in the cabin; two in the front and three at the rear. The computing power of the MBUX has increased by 50%, making it much faster and in sync than before. Also, the system now gets a fingerprint scanner & voice recognition for activating personalized profiles set according to the user’s preference. The main touchscreen in the S-Class is now a 12.8-inch OLED unit which results in better colours and haptic feedback response. The S-Class gets a new MBUX rear tablet as well. Other than this, MBUX’s ‘Hey Mercedes’ can now be activated from the rear seats.

4D Surround System & active ambient lighting

The luxury sedan will now come with a 4D surround sound system from Burmester. 8 speaker-like exciters have also been integrated into seats to optimize the surround sound effect to reproduce a sound massage effect. The car gets a total of 31 loudspeakers including a subwoofer and 8 exciters to give the passengers a great in-cabin entertainment experience. The car also gets an active ambient lighting system which is capable of giving visual warnings and indication through a system of close to 250 LEDs.

Mercedes Me

Mercedes has extended its connected car tech to make the overall user experience more convenient. Some key features include geofencing, remote engine start, vehicle health status, remote windows & sunroof control via app and vehicle finder. Along with this, the Mercedes Me app will come integrated with Alexa and Google, meaning you can send your commands to the car through your Alexa and Google assistants present at home or office.

Enhanced safety

The car now comes with enhanced safety features. The car gets a total of 10 airbags. The new S-Class gets the world’s first frontal airbags for rear passengers to strengthen safety in the second row as well. For better convenience, the S-Class now comes with rear-axle steering which allows for better parking and steering maneuverability. Along with this, the rear-axle steering also improves high-speed stabilization. Mercedes has also made Driving Assistance Package 5.0 available with the S-Class. This includes active distance assist, active lane-keeping assist, parking assist, Mercedes’ Pre-Safe and a few other important features.

Enhanced dimensions

The new Mercedes S-Class now comes with improved dimensions. The sedan is now 34mm longer, 22mm wider and 13mm taller. The final dimensions thus stand at 5289mm in length, 1954mm in width and 1503mm in height. Other than this, the wheelbase has also been hiked by 51mm, making it 3216mm long. All this comes together to provide a much better cabin experience. With this, S-Class has also managed to provide the largest boot in its segment.

Variants & engine options

The car will in two variants viz. S400d 4MATIC and S450 4MATIC. The S400d will come powered by a 2.9-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine that will be capable of making 330bhp and 700Nm of torque. The car will be able to do a 0-100kmph in 5.4 seconds with this configuration. The S450, on the other hand, will come powered by a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder petrol engine that will be capable of making 367bhp and 500Nm of torque. The car will do a 0-100kmph in 5.1 seconds with this configuration.

Pricing

The S400d 4MATIC is priced at Rs 2.17 Crores whereas the S450 4MATIC is priced at Rs 2.19 Crores.
