Thar, Sonet, Creta – Which Rs 16 Lakh car to buy?
With a plethora of options available in the market, it becomes difficult to choose the perfect car for yourself. The price bracket under Rs 20 Lakh is a crowded place with all sorts of vehicles available there. Out of them, SUVs are the ones that have caught buyers’ attention the most. For this article, we have chosen three SUVs from different segments viz. the Kia Sonet, the Hyundai Creta and the Mahindra Thar. So, keeping that in mind, today’s article will deal with which Rs 16 Lakh car should you buy. Let’s go.
Kia Sonet
The Kia Sonet is 3995mm long, 1790mm wide and 1642mm tall. Sonet has a ground clearance of 205mm and has a boot space of 392 litres. With Rs 16 Lakh, you can get the top variant of the Kia Sonet, the GTX Plus 1.5 Automatic Dual Tone variant. This variant comes in at Rs 15.90 Lakh. Or, if you do not wish to go with a diesel engine, you can opt for the GTX Plus 1.0 DCT Dual Tone variant. This variant comes in at Rs 15.26 Lakh.
The 1.0-litre turbo petrol unit will make 118bhp & 172Nm of torque. The 1.5-litre diesel unit will make 113bhp & 250Nm of torque. With the GTX Plus variant, you get everything the Sonet has to offer. A 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated front seats, 7-speaker premium sound system by BOSE, connected car technology (UVO), six airbags, ambient lighting, air purifier, front & rear parking sensors, TPMS, Crown Jewel LED headlamps, 16-inch alloys, wireless charging and many others.
Mahindra Thar
Thar is 3985mm long, 1855mm wide & 1920mm tall. The car sits on a wheelbase of 2450mm and gets a ground clearance of 226mm. For Rs 16 Lakh, you can get the LX 4-STR Hard Top Petrol MT variant. This variant costs Rs 15.37 Lakh. You can also get the LX 4-STR Convertible Diesel MT variant of the Thar. This variant comes in at Rs 16.05 Lakh, however, after dealer discounts and external insurance, you can get it under Rs 16 Lakh.
The petrol variant gets a 2.0-litre mStallion engine that makes 150bhp and 300Nm of torque. The diesel variant of the Thar gets a 2.2-litre mHawk engine that makes 130bhp and 300Nm of torque. The LX variants are the most loaded features and get everything that the Thar has to offer. Some key features include a touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, multi-function steering wheel, auto AC, TPMS, connected car technology and brake locking differential.
Hyundai Creta
The Hyundai Creta stands at 4300mm long, 1790mm wide & 1635mm tall. It sits on a wheelbase of 2610mm and gets a boot storage capacity of 433-litres. Creta comes with a ground clearance of 190mm. For Rs 16 Lakh, you can get the S 1.5 diesel variant or the S 1.5 petrol variant of this car. The diesel variant comes in at Rs 15.83 Lakh, whereas the petrol variant comes in at Rs 14.40 Lakh. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is capable of making 113bhp and 144Nm of torque. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is capable of making 113bhp and 250Nm of torque. Both the variants get manual gearboxes only.
S variant of the Creta gets features like front fog lamps, rear defogger, automatic headlamps, 16-inch steel wheels, rear window sunshade, cruise control, push-button start-stop, auto AC, rear washer-wiper, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and a few others.
Which one should you buy?
With all three cars belonging to different segments, it ultimately boils down to user preference and usage. If you want a car that comes loaded with the most modern features, gets decently powerful engines and looks bold, you should go with the Kia Sonet. However, keep in mind that the 2nd-row is only comfortable for two passengers. If cabin and boot space is your priority and you are willing to miss out on some features that the Sonet gets, you should go for the Creta. However, keep in mind that the engine options that the Sonet offers under the target price bracket make equal or more power than what Creta offers.
Now, coming to Thar, if you want a car that can do serious off-roading, commands massive road presence, comes decently loaded with features and is solidly built, you should definitely go for it. This car might not come loaded with all features that the other cars get but can outshine them when it comes to performance.
