New technology – Seatbelts for bikes and scooters
Road safety as a concept becomes very crucial because, with millions of cars & other vehicles on the road, the chances of accidents or unfortunate events increase. Enhancing the safety in a car is much easier than making a bike safer for the user. Cars, mostly being closed entities have a much bigger scope of addition of safety elements. Due to the minimal design, it becomes difficult to incorporate any major safety elements on a bike. However, this is not a reason for new ideas to stop. Taking the importance of road safety forward, renowned Italian design and engineering firm Italdesign has patented a seatbelt system for two-wheelers, a first of its kind in the world. Today’s article will deal with this new technological development, seatbelts for scooters and bikes and we will try to explore it in detail.
How does the seatbelt for scooters work?
The seatbelt system is comprised of a rigid backrest that the rider would have to strap to his body, which in turn is connected to an onboard computer. During a collision, the sensors & onboard computer would come into play to decide whether the backrest needs to be kept attached to the system, or whether it has to be let loose from the system. Remember, the rider will be strapped to the backrest in either case. In case of head-on collisions, the system would keep the backrest attached. This would prevent the rider from flying off, minimizing the chances of fatal injuries. In cases like slipping, the system would let go of the backrest which has the driver strapped onto, reducing chances of further damage caused by sliding on road. The whole system can be compared to airbags. Airbags are deployed to protect the passengers from any further damage, and this system is also aiming to do the same.
The practical application for this technology is yet to be known. Currently, we do have smart and tethered airbag systems in the world and bikers use them for touring or on the racetrack. With the seatbelts, enhancing scooter safety would boost be great for urban mobility.
