With the segment slowly gaining traction, Toyota and Ford could seize this opportunity to gain the initial mover advantage with their products viz. Hilux and Ranger respectively. Now, why do we think both brands could make it happen; because, their SUV counterparts, the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour are already being made in the country. Dimensions
The Toyota Hilux is 5325mm long, 1900mm wide & 1795mm tall. It gets a ground clearance of 247mm and sits on a 3085mm wheelbase. The Ranger on the other hand is 5434mm long, 1867mm wide & 1815mm tall. It gets a ground clearance of 230mm and sits on a 3220mm wheelbase.
Specifications
The Toyota Hilux is expected to come powered by a 2.4-litre diesel engine along with a 2.8-litre diesel engine. The 2.4-litre unit makes close to 150bhp and 400Nm of torque. The 2.8-litre unit on the other hand makes 204bhp and 500Nm of torque. Both the units are expected to be mated to a manual as well as automatic transmission. The 2.4-litre unit is expected to be offered with 2WD as well as 4WD options whereas the 2.8-litre unit will just be offered with 4WD. Also, Toyota might offer a petrol engine on this as well. The Ranger is expected to share the 2.0-litre diesel engine from the Endeavour which makes 168bhp and 420Nm of torque. This engine is mated to 10-speed automatic transmissions. For enhancing the functionality, Ford might offer a manual transmission as well. The Ranger will also be made available with 2WD as well as 4WD options.
Toyota Hilux vs Ford Ranger Interior
The Hilux is not expected to be very different from the Fortuner on the inside. The cabin experience will however differ as the 2nd-row seats won’t be as comfortable as the Fortuner. Also, the Hilux being a pickup will result in the cabin seats being limited to 5. The interior is expected to sport a similar instrument cluster setup that we get with the Fortuner. Similar is the case with the Ford Ranger as well. The car will sport a cabin similar to the Ford Endeavour.
Features
A touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, tilt & telescopic adjustable multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, cooled glove box, reverse parking camera, 6-speaker sound system and hill start assist might be some of the prominent features. The Ranger is also expected to come with features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay connectivity, 4X4 Shift-on-the-fly, connected car technology, e-locking rear and hill descent control to name some.
Pricing
With both the cars only finding a single competitor in the country, the Isuzu D-Max, the respective brands are expected to keep the pricing competitive in order to snatch the market and create more opportunities for these products. For reference, the new Isuzu D-Max starts at Rs 20.62 Lakhs (on-road Mumbai).
