BMW have indicated that the third model in the ‘i’ series could be a sedan. Likely to sport the i5 badge, the manufacturer has declared that they are in the final stages of discussions surrounding this all-important announcement.

The reason for this inference lies in the current ‘i’ series lineup by BMW. There is the i3 – an electric car that’s perfectly at home in the city. And then there’s the i8 – BMW’s plugin-hybrid in a sports car guise. So naturally, the needle points towards the third model, the i5 turning out to be a sedan – in a bid to balance out the lineup. If other sources are to be believed, then BMW is also weighing in the merits of a stretched out i3.

It could possibly be an MPV’esque design, to maximize the benefits of a more practical layout and the resultant increase in cabin volume for passengers.

Irrespective of what body-style wins, the new i5 could very well be unveiled next year, in 2016 to coincide with the company’s 100th anniversary celebrations. Ian Robertson, Board Member, Sales and Marketing at BMW Motors did happen to mention that: You will see more ‘i’ products and we are in the final stages of deciding what the next car will be and when you’ll see it.

If indeed the i5 turns out to be a sedan, then it would go up against the upcoming Model 3 from Tesla Motors, in what promises to be an epic battle with great spoils for whoever comes out trumps. Let’s wait and watch then.
