If online stories surfacing about more rebadged Maruti Suzuki models are soon going to be part of the Toyota India line-up are correct, TKM is going to have two more cars to expand the portfolio. Will the brand stop selling the Yaris and will there be a C-segment SUV to add to sales volumes? Toyota has been quiet on all these topics. We have seen the RAV4 hybrid being tested recently but are yet to hear officially from the brand. But what about the Toyota Hilux? Yes, a vehicle that we want and can see many reasons for it to come to India. Let’s talk more.

Can we make the Hilux in India?

Yes. The Toyota Hilux is built on the IMV platform, similar to the Innova and the Fortuner which are built in India. So obviously Toyota has been thinking of launching this car in India. The Hilux also shares it’s engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive systems with those cars. The ladder on frame chassis is also the same. The car is longer in length at 5,285mm and has a longer wheelbase too at 3,085mm. It’s rear suspension has leafsprings and the gearbox is and engine are also retuned to it’s usage. All of this is possible to be adopted for manufacturing this car in India. The Hilux would be easy to manufacture as some of the parts would be shared with the Fortuner and Innova. The front bumpers, headlights, hood and rear will all be different. But we feel that the inside would be mostly the same layout as the Fortuner in terms of seats, features and accessories.

Who will buy the Toyota Hilux?

The truth is that the pick-up truck market exists for commercial use with very basic and cheap to get Mahindra Bolero pick-up. The truck will appeal to  someone who wants a combination of a tough off-roader, utilitarian work horse and SUV comfort. It will do battle with the Isuzu D-Max VCross. People who are looking for a overlanding vehicle, large land owners, big factory units, transport businesses and government branches and even potentially armed forces could be interested in the Toyota Hilux.
