Driving a manual car is a good skill to have. But if you do not know how a manual transmission works you might end up inviting damage if do these 5 things. Some of these are done out of sheer habit by even a lot of drivers who have been driving a car for many years.

Leave in Neutral

As we mentioned earlier, the clutch is not something that replaces neutral. If you are at the stoplight shit into neutral and hold onto the brake. Holding the clutch in wears out the friction plates and causes excessive wear and early replacement.

Resting your foot

A lot of new drivers might have the anxiety of stalling a car. So they might develop a habit of resting their foot on the clutch pedal so they might press it whenever needed. Also if your car does not have a dead pedal then it becomes quite uncomfortable to keep the foot on the floor.

Clutch hold

Avoid performing a clutch hold on an uphill. This wears out the pressure plate and throws bearing drastically. Instead, hold the brake and put the car in neutral. Remember that the clutch is not supposed to be pressed in all the time. In case of an emergency, the clutch does help but avoid this frequently as it causes massive wear and tear.

Now if you have the fear of rolling back on a hill pull the e-brake and slowly release the clutch till you feel the car is tugging. Then take off the brake slowly and press the accelerator. Try practising this on a flat surface so that you get the hang of it. Also, find out if your car has a hill-hold technology. This will hold the brake till you start moving forward.

Rest your hand

Manual Car

Lastly resting your hand on the gear lever is a bad habit. It can cause the shift fork to put pressure on the transmission, This might rub against the moving part and cause clearance issues. It is damage that occurs over age but can cost a lot as it could fail the transmission miserably.

Don’t stress the engine

If you are in a higher gear and you want to go faster do not open the throttle and let the engine catch up. This puts stress on the transmission as the engine is operating on full power and the transmission has a higher gear load. This could either stall the engine or if you have a bigger engine it might catch up but the stress on the engine could damage it.
