The C segment SUV market is on the rise. With already cars like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, Renualt Duster making up for it. More cars like the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq will join soon. There are rumblings about Toyota, Ford and Maruti soon joining the segment with their individual offerings. So this makes the segment very important and one that cannot be overlooked by any manufacturer. Everyone wants a pie of the cake currently being enjoyed by the Creta. But we have been spotting another Rs 12 lakh Hyundai Creta Competition SUV – the MG Astor for some time so lets talk about it.

Design

The Rs 12 Lakh Hyundai Creta – the MG Astor will be very similar in terms of design to the ZS EV. Infact it is the same car with the diffrance here being the powertrain which is of an IC engine rather than a EV. The Astor is going to retain lot of the elements from the ZS. Things like the design of the front grille, headlights and the rear LED tail-lamps are expected to be the same on the MG Astor. On the exterior the only changes expected are – new colors, new alloy wheels and more exterior accessories. At the most, the bumpers of both cars will have certain differences.

Below in the spyshots we can see a sharkfin antenna, an exhaust hanging below the bumper and its LED taillights distinctively. Also the big MG logo is there on the tailgate.

The upcoming MG is expected to come with most of the features which the ZS gets. A bigger touchscreen infotainment system will be expected here and so will ventilated seats. Now the car will get a panoramic sunroof, push start-stop button, air purifier, driving modes, cruise control, automatic headlamps, automatic rain-sensing wipers and power-adjustable driver seat. All of this is available with the ZS EV.

In terms of safety the MG ZS EV was awarded a 5-star NCAP safety rating. The Astor is also expected to maintain these safety standards with features like ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, 6-airbags, 3-point seatbelt, electric parking brake, hill descent control, hill start assist, ESC, parking sensors and reverse parking camera with guidelines.

Engine

The engine options with the the MG Astor internationally include a 1.5-litre VTi engine which produces 118bhp and 150Nm of torque. The foreign market also gets a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine on the Astor which produces 161bhp and 230Nm of torque. The car comes with options of a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. For this Rs 12 lakh Hyundai Creta Competition SUV, it will be interesting to see if multiple engine and gearbox options which include a diesel will be available.

This car would join a segment where prices range  from Rs 12 lakhs to almost Rs 22 lakhs. Where will MG price the Astor and how competitive will it be? We will soon find out.
