Driving across the country is a fascinating idea – fun for some, a livelihood or necessity for others. In India one of the most travelled long distance route between two cities is the Mumbai Delhi corridor. Right now the NHAI is in the middle of the ambitious idea of the making the Mumbai Delhi Expressway. This road will be a very important as it will relive the pressure of the current Mumbai Delhi highway – the NH48, which is part of the Golden Quadrilateral. The old highway is choked with multiple entry and exit points throughout it’s length. The expressway on the other hand will have controlled access. It will be a total 8 lane road where on the other hand, the NH48 becomes a single lane or dual carriage way in some places. Its total length with be 1250 kilometers and will pass through 5 states.
Below we will try and understand the exact route that this expressway will be taking. Which cities will it be passing and other key highlights.
Mumbai Delhi Expressway Route
Start and Finish –
The expressway will start from the Sohna in Gurgaon, Haryana and end in Mira-Bhayander outside Mumbai. There will be two extensions of the expressway on both sides. On side will connect Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi and will be 60 kilometers. And on the Mumbai side – a 90 kilometer road will connect JNPT port in Navi Mumbai to the expressway in Virar. Earlier the plan was to make the expressway via Agra but that would have been very long.
So the route goes like this – Sohna, Gurgaon – Mewat, Haryana – Alwar, Rajasthan – Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh – Dahod, Gujarat – Vadodara, Gujarat and then will run parallel to the NH48 till Mira Bhayandar. The size breakdown per state will be – Haryana with 80 kilometers, 380 kilometers in Rajasthan, 370 kilometers in Madhya Pradesh, 300 kilometers in Gujarat and 120 kilometers in Maharashtra. This will decrease the distance by 150 kilometers between both cities and reduce travel time to an estimated 12 hours.
The earlier planned – Mumbai – Vadodara expressway is now part of this whole project to Delhi. This expressway comes under the Bharat Mala Paryojna. The plan it to develop this road alongside the upcoming Delhi – Mumbai freight corridor which is currently the busiest in the country.
Mumbai Delhi Expressway Cost
The expressway is going to be built by 2023 with future planning in mind. It will have land in certain places to widen it in the future. The total cost will be Rs 1,00,000 crores. The cost gets split into Rs 60,000 crore for construction and Rs 40,000 crore for land acquisition. The Delhi Vadodara part will be concrete and the rest will be asphalt. The Mumbai to Vadodara part will be built with a hybrid annuity model where 40% will be funded by the government and 60% by contractors. The contractors after the completion of the project will get a yearly compensation which will be decided before hand. The rest of the expressway will be built with the EPC model, where contractors will make the entire project and it will be handed over and funded directly by the government after it is completed.
In both model, the toll will be collected by the government and not contractors. Closed Tolling method will be put in place where toll will be taken according to the distance travelled with toll booths at entry and exits. One can’t enter the expressway without using one of the 43 proper interchanges.
Mumbai Delhi Expressway Benefits
Apart from travel time being cut down, the expressway will help ease the traffic and allow for better movement on the highway for cargo and passenger vehicles. It will also generate a tremendous amount of employment and will enrich the areas it will pass through. The government estimates that 32,00,00,000 litres of fuel will be saved every year which obviously will lead to lesser pollution. Alongside the expressway more than 15 lakhs trees will also be planted.
