Toyota has no car in its India line-up which bridges the gap between the Urban Cruiser and the Innova. And undoubtedly, this gap is huge. Competitors like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Hector and Tata Harrier give heavy competition to each other mainly in this void. Platform
Toyota, in 2015 started producing its vehicles on the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. With the TNGA platform on board, Toyota could accommodate vehicles of different sizes as well as different types of drivetrains like all-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and front-drive. India, however, is yet to receive a product that could help Toyota introduce TNGA to the Indian customers.
So, we expect this SUV to be based on the TNGA platform. If Toyota brings the TNGA platform for India, it could also help the brand revive some iconic nameplates like the Etios, Etios Liva and Corolla, which Toyota did not update to comply with the BS6 emission norms. Along with these, Toyota could also bring products that the brand sells in the international markets.

Bringing this platform might also benefit Maruti Suzuki, which currently shares two of its product with the Toyota brand, viz. the Urban Cruiser and the Glanza. This time, however, Toyota might share its products with the Maruti. With the help of Toyota, Maruti might also be able to make its presence felt in this segment.
Tough Competition
The Hyundai Creta has been ruling the C-segment for quite many years now. Moreover, with competition increasing day by day, Toyota does need a product to rival the other competitors. Brands like Skoda and Volkswagen are also ready to launch their cars, with Skoda already unveiling the Kushaq and Volkswagen expected to unveil the Taigun very soon. Seeing a Japanese manufacturer, which boasts of great service network and reliability, might push other brands in a corner.
Expected Features
The SUV is expected to be based on the design language of RAV4 which sits on the TNGA platform. The car might come with connected car tech, which is offered by most other competitors. The car might also come with front and rear parking sensors as well as a 360-degree parking camera. On the safety front, ESP along with 6 airbags might be on offer. We might get to see this Rs 12 Lakh Toyota SUV coming powered with Maruti’s 1.5-litre K15B smart hybrid petrol engine. A diesel engine from Maruti is also expected.
