Why there aren’t CNG AMT cars?

CNG cars are the economical alternative to run a petrol car. But as of now manufacturers are not offering AMT gear box option on CNG models. Further in this article we will explain you why making a CNG AMT for manufacturers is a task.

CNG Basics

Before we get in why there is not CNG AMT let’s know how does CNG work. CNG is mounted on the existing petrol engine no mater company fitted or dealer.

If you have driven a manual CNG car then you know that the CNG car makes slightly lesser power in the lower rpm and there is less torque too.

Problems With AMT

Now if your car has and AMT gear box it is not truly automatic. You as a driver of the vehicle are not doing gear changes but there is a computerised mechanism which does all the work that you do in a manual car.

With petrol engine too there is a slight delay in the shift and you do rev a car bit more. So when the CNG kit is added to the engine the engine has to under go more stress.

If we take a look at the roles of the engine and transmission then the engine is supposed to make power where as the transmission need to deliver it to the wheels. If you engine works fine with CNG transmission too should have no problem delivering the power that is made.

But the loss of power and torque in a CNG run engine makes it difficult to tune in an AMT. So manufacturers do not prefer offering CNG AMT cars.

Other Cautions with CNG AMT cars

Now you might have the question, ‘Can I fit a CNG kit on my petrol AMT car?’ As long as the car can run properly and give you the desired mileage you can make you car CNG AMT.

In terms of safety CNG slightly is a problem as there is added risk when it comes to crashes. Also the range on you CNG car is quite limited as you might look at a range of maximum of 250km on your CNG car.

Also if you are getting CNG fitted make sure that it is from the dealer and clear your doubts about the warranty of the vehicle.

There are cars like Alto, Spresso, WagonR, Celerio, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Hyundai Aura which we expect to come with CNG AMT option but the companies do not provide with such options. These is because of the complexity of the technology and the price.
