Pickup trucks! Everyone seems to be speculating and getting wishful thoughts about what they want and should come to India. Now before we talk about the Ford Maverick, let’s understand the market in India. We had the Tata Xenon XT and Mahindra Scorpio Getaway. The news in the world of speculation is that some pickup trucks are on there, namely the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Now the Ranger Raptor according to company sources is set to come but there is no confirmation for the Ranger itself.
So if Ford does want to get a pickup truck to India, could it be something else. Something smaller and well suited for our market. What about the Ford Maverick.
What is it?
Now, this compact truck is based on the newly revealed Ford Bronco Sport. In North America, it is supposed to take on the Honda Ridgeline and Hyundai Santa Cruz. Yes, it will be a front-wheel drive, unibody truck (C2 unibody platform) that will fill the gap in the Ford portfolio of a basic truck. It is rumoured to start at around $20,000 which is roughly Rs 14 lakhs. So we can see it coming in at the pricing of the Isuzu DMax VCross. Localization would be cheaper obviously but if Ford decides to get it here in the near future – CKD or CBU is the way forward. This will increase the price by a lot. Thus, bringing the value for money quotient down for the product.
Engine and Specifications
Powertrains will likely be shared with Bronco Sport. This means a 181bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-three or 245-hp 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four. In both cases an 8-speed automatic is standard. If this could come to India, a 1.5-litre engine could be an option as it will attract less tax and Ford could via CKD get this car here. Now, this is a longshot as this car has not been shown in any Asian market or has been spotted testing in any of those countries.
Production is going to start in Mexico to keep costs down for the US market. Even Bronco Sport is built there. Will it come to India? Right now there is a rumbling of the Hilux to come to India and give the VCross competition. The Ranger with a diesel engine, four-wheel drive and with more parts shared with the Endeavour is the logical choice. A small truck like the Maverick will most likely not come.
