Toyota Fortuner vs competition – Still value for money?
Toyota Fortuner has been leading the SUV segment in the country for a very long time. Multiple competitors have tried to claim the lead but Fortuner never misses the top mark. Toyota recently sold 2053 units of the Fortuner in the month of February. However, the competition also offers great products in the price bracket. In this article, we will discuss Fortuner and its competition.
Main Competitors
The Fortuner mainly faces competition from 3 other products in the country viz. the Mahindra Alturus G4, Ford Endeavour and the MG Gloster. Toyota Fortuner starts at Rs 35.70 Lakhs whereas Mahindra Alturus G4, MG Gloster and Ford Endeavour start from Rs 34.81 Lakhs, Rs 36.21 Lakhs and Rs 36.33 Lakhs respectively. All prices mentioned are on-road Mumbai prices.
Fortuner Variants
The Toyota Fortuner offers seven variants in total to help the buyers with many options to choose from. The Fortuner is offered with 2.7-litre and 2.8-litre engines which come mated to manual and automatic gearboxes. The 2.7-litre engine is a petrol-only unit and is offered with a 4X2 drivetrain setup. The 2.8-litre engine is a diesel-only unit and comes mated to manual and automatic gearboxes as well. However, the diesel engine comes with a 4X2 drivetrain along with a 4X4 drivetrain. The Fortuner now comes with a special edition, the Legender as well. It comes with the 2.8-litre 4X2 automatic setup.
What differentiates the Fortuner from the rest of the competition is that the Fortuner is the only big SUV in its segment which comes with a manual transmission and also a petrol engine. Also, Toyota offers different variants with changes in drivetrains rather than changes in trim. The things which change ultimately depend upon the engine type. The Legender is however offered with some extra features over the regular Fortuner.
The diesel variants take the lead over the petrol variants with features like automatic idling start-stop and pitch & bounce stability controls. The diesel variants also get super chrome alloy wheels with the 4X4 setup. Other than this, all other things are kept common between the petrol and diesel variant, meaning the base variant of the Fortuner comes loaded with almost all the amenities which the diesel variant gets.
The Legender, however, gets some features over the regular Fortuner. These include a dual-tone black roof, interior ambient lighting, rear USB port, wireless phone charging and kick sensor for back door opening. However, the funny thing is that the Legender misses the 9-speaker JBL music system which the regular Fortuner gets.
Variants on competition
The competition on the other hand offers fewer variants to choose from. The Alturas G4 offers two variants only with a 2.2-litre diesel engine mated to 4X2 and 4X4 drivetrains. The top variant gets some extra features over the base variant. HID headlamps, LED fog lamps with cornering lamps, sunroof with anti-pinch, front rain-sensing wipers and memory profile seats are some of the key differences.
The MG Gloster offers five variants, a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine mated to a 2WD setup and a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine mated to a 4WD setup. The 2WD and 4WD drivetrains come with 6-seater and 7-seater options. The Gloster is the only product in this list that differentiates heavily based on trim.
The base model which is the 2WD 7-seater gets key features like auto LED headlamps with DRLs, front and rear fog lamps, 7 airbags, auto-wipers, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, driving modes and cruise control. The model above it, which is the 2WD 6-seater gets an 8-inch MID, ambient lighting, cornering lamps, Android Auto & Apple Car Play, sunroof and paddle shifters as some of the key differences. The 4WD 6-seater and 7-seater variants get 64-colour ambient light, panoramic sunroof, driver seat with memory, heat & ventilation, and wireless charging as some of the key features. The top variant of the MG Gloster gets added ADAS.
The Ford Endeavour is offered in four variants, a 2.0-litre diesel engine mated to automatic gearboxes with 4X2 and 4X4 drivetrain setups. The top variant gets driver knee airbag, power-folding 3rd-row, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, park assist and front parking sensor as some of the key features over the base variant.
