Mahindra and Ford, the two automotive tycoons had come together for a JV plan, back in 2019. Both the brands were looking forward to helping each other out with multiple strategies and services. The companies were also expected to bring a C-segment SUV together. However, the whole JV has seen multiple speed-breakers to date. In this article, we will discuss the future of the JV and Ford XUV500 SUV. Read on to know more.

Ford Mahindra Partnership

Initial Plans

Under the JV, which was initiated on October 1 of 2019, Ford and Mahindra had together planned to develop and market Ford’s products in India. Moreover, Ford and Mahindra also planned to market their products together in foreign markets. But, due to the unprecedented economic catastrophe that was globally felt due to the Coronavirus pandemic, both brands mutually decided to call the JV off. But, Ford planned to continue with the planned projects under a contractual-based manufacturing agreement with Mahindra.

Current Scenario

We reported to you earlier that the JV was being renegotiated, and nothing was thrown off the table. However, earlier this month, Ford said that it is rethinking its strategy for the country and the products which were supposed to be developed under the JV are under reassessment and no new investments are currently being made.

What about the Ford XUV500 SUV

With all future products under reassessment, we are not sure if the XUV500 based Ford SUV will see the light of the day. We are further not sure if Ford will be working forward to bring a C-segment SUV for the country.

We hope the SUV comes to the market as it will be a great addition to the competition in the segment and it will further help Ford India’s lineup for the customers. We can say that Ford has globally talked about running its India operations independently and we also recently have spotted an updated EcoSport which saw its images leak online. Many claim it is an SE variant but nothing has been officially announced. We have also seen body shells of the Raptor pickup truck at Jayam Autos plant where R&D could be going on. So Ford is definitely planning new projects for India. We have to wait to find out.
