Ford-Mahindra JV called off
Mahindra and Ford were working together on the future of Ford Motors in the country with plans of shared production and multiple products being the centre of talks. We had informed you earlier that although the joint venture being called off was in talks but there were renegotiations happening from both sides. However, Ford has recently declared that the future plans with Mahindra have been put on hold and Ford is framing a new strategy for itself in the country. In this article, we will discuss what this decision could bring for the brands as well as the customers.
XUV500-based car to halt?
With the JV being put on hold, we expect Ford to hold its plans for the shared SUV with Mahindra as well. Earlier, the JV was expected to result in Mahindra sharing its engine and platform with the American brand to help Ford launch an affordable SUV in the country. However, with Ford holding the JV, we are not sure if the XUV500-based product will see the light of the day.
Ford Ecosport Turbo also on hold?
Ford India was planning to bring a turbo-petrol variant for its Ecosport, with the engine being supplied by Mahindra. Mahindra was expected to share its 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine which we see on the Mahindra XUV300. However, with the JV on hold, we are not sure if the customers would get to experience the Ecosport in the turbo-petrol avatar.
Ford products from international markets?
With earlier plans of Mahindra doing contractual manufacturing for Ford, it was expected that Ford would be able to bring some of its products to India which are already being sold in the international markets, giving Ford a chance to turn its tables in the country’s vehicle sales charts. However, we are not sure if calling-off the JV would result in Ford not bringing international products or Ford separately working to bring some new products for the Indian customers.
How will it affect Mahindra?
The JV was not only a beneficial deal for the American brand but for the Indian brand as well. With Mahindra sharing the production line with Ford, it was expected that Ford would share some of its products with Mahindra as well in order for Mahindra to bring in some fresh vehicles for the country. Moreover, the partnership with Ford would have opened gateways to the international markets for Mahindra.
