The Tata Nexon has been doing well in terms of sales only because of its affordability. In a developing country like India, price is a major car buying factor. Rajeev Chaba, president and managing director of MG Motor India realizes this and promised to bring a new EV in similar price bracket.  The 2021 MG ZS EV is a great product but still costs a lot for the majority of car buyers.

MG also announced that it planning to bring a new battery with improved range in India. The new battery according to India will be capable of a range of about 500kms. MG may launch it with the existing ZS EV or launch it with an all-together new vehicle. Being the sub-15 lakh price segment we can expect the new MG EV to be similar to the Nexon EV.

Affordability goes a long way in attracting customers towards EVs. By the end of 2021, MG is also expected to launch a hatchback EV which will keep the costs low but also provide a viable range option. The Tata Altroz EV which was showcased during the Auto Expo can be considered a competition to this car. If launched below Rs.10 lakh, it will become the one of the cheapest EVs in India and attract a lot of new customers.

What does the company say?

Upcoming MG Electric Cars in India 2021

Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director, MG Motor India said, “If suppose your price point comes down below ₹ 20 lakh then you’ll have a better market. Like the Tata Nexon is doing well. They are selling 300-400 units a month because their price point is about ₹ 15 – 16 lakh. So, you know if we can bring down the price point below that mark, I think we can sell more volumes and can spread the movement faster. That’s the area, which is of interest to us, we’re looking at that, which EV we can bring in but we’re committed that we’ll bring a new EV in the next two years.”
