The SUV segment in India is on the boom. Whether you look towards micro SUVs, compact SUVs or premium SUVs, Indians have slowly become obsessed with them. The electric SUV market in India however does not have much competition. You have the cheapest EV as the Tata Nexon EV while the MG ZS EV is also present. Hyundai Kona Electric also competes here but does not look quite like a sports utility vehicle and at the other end of the spectrum, the Mercedes EQC sits. With the EV market in boom, with the introduction of Tesla in India, other manufacturers are also getting ready to fire their guns. Name and Design
The 2022 Volkswagen Electric SUV which is expected to be launched in India is the Volkswagen I.D.4. This is a sub-compact electric SUV from Volkswagen which is heavily based on the Tiguan. Already sold in the international market, it is a pretty decent e-SUV. Coming to the design of the SUV, large dimensions along with curvy looks can be seen on this SUV.
Going against the norm of sharp lines and edges, Volkswagen has surely created something beautiful. The front design does not have any fake front grilles and comes with LED strip between both the headlights which make it similar looking to the Seltos. The rear taillights on the other hand also have a similar tail strip behind which may remind you of the 2020 Creta. In the international market, it comes with 20-inch alloy wheels.
Interiors
Like all the other EVs in the market, the interiors of the car are simple yet functional. Volkswagen has completely ditched dials and physical switches in this electric SUV. With the I.D.4 you get two screens. The first screen is the all-digital instrument cluster which is pretty modern looking and shows a multitude of parameters. The Volkswagen I.D.4 also comes with 10/12-inch touchscreen infotainment system for entertainment and music. While it is not as big as the Tesla Model 3, the biggest competitor, it will help keep the price low when sold in India.
The international electric SUV comes with two interior colour options but India may get only one. Also a host of advanced safety features will be removed from the car for India as they are simply not feasible. In the international market, the Volkswagen ID4’s interiors look quite similar to the BMW I3. Better seat and features are also part of the package.
Engine and Performance
This electric SUV from Volkswagen comes with a 52kW and 72kW battery packs. The former can deliver ranges upto 400km while the latter provides juice upto 520km. Being an SUV, larger dimensions and heavyweight lead to minimal range loss compared to the other electric cars. If brought to India as CBU, expect 100% taxation along with range only upto 400kms. The car sold internationally is also RWD which is quite good. We expect the electric motor with the car to produce around 150bhp.
Price and Launch
No guaranteed date can be said about the launch of the SUV in India. However, after the Tesla and EV buzz, Volkswagen will surely not want to miss on capable customers. If launched in India with 100% taxation the car will be out of reach for the majority of people. If priced around Rs.50-70 lakhs, Volkswagen will be able to find customers and sell decent numbers.
