SUV segment in India has become one of the most famous car segment present. While many cars sold as SUVs in India are not offroad capable, people simply prefer it for the looks and status symbol they provide. Every car manufacturer is looking towards providing at least one SUV option under major price brackets. Now traditionally the competition in terms of SUVs has always had one fierce battle – Mahindra Scorpio vs Tata Safari in India. Find out more below.

Mahindra Scorpio

The Mahindra Scorpio next generation has already been spotted testing a couple of times in India as of now. The main feature of the next generation Mahindra Scorpio is that the new SUV is based on the next-generation Thar’s ladder-frame chassis. Mahindra Thar has already scored a 4-star rating in the Global NCAP tests so this chassis is pretty well built and sturdy. The launch of the SUV is expected sometime next year according to our sources. Mahindra in India are known for their SUVs and has one more SUV planned for next year.

Tata Safari

First-gen Tata Safari was launched in 1998. The SUV was discontinued last year as it was not upgraded to new safety and emission norms. Over each of its generations, the Tata Safari has received plenty of attention. 2012 saw its second upgrade and was named the Safari Storme.  The new Tata Safari is expected to come with electronic steering wheel and electronic park function. Moreover we also expect disc brakes along with 18-inch new alloy wheels.

Earlier versions of the Safari SUV were rugged and were offered with 4×4 drive. The latest one is a more modern SUV – which will offer top-notch features, comfort and technology. It will be the new flagship by Tata Motors. But unlike the previous Safari, the new car will not be offered with 4×4 or AWD system. It will only be offered as an FWD SUV, based on the same platform as the Harrier.

Scorpio Interior

2021 Mahindra Scorpio

Like all the modern launches, the next generation Mahindra Scorpio will come with fairly simple interiors but with all the modern features. A fresh dashboard layout with touchscreen infotainment system is expected to make an appearance on the inside. The new Mahindra Scorpio is also expected to share a lot of interior components with the Mahindra Marazzo which will keep the prices of the new generation quite competitive.  The next generation Mahindra Scorpio’s interiors has been conceptualized and shaped at Mahindra’s North American Technical Centre in Detroit, United States, and engineered and developed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai. Safari Interiors

Similarities between Safari and Harrier extend to the interiors as well. It sports similar dashboard and interior layout with an 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, electrically adjustable driver seat, a sunroof, keyless entry, push-button start and cruise control. To be offered in 6 and 7 seater options, the Safari will get captain seats in its 6 seater version and bench type seats for the 7 seater variant. In the video, Tata promises the new Safari to be a true 7-seater just like its predecessor.

Scorpio Engine and Performance

Like the Mahindra Thar, the new Mahindra Scorpio will be available with both BS6 compliant Petrol and Diesel engine. The 2.2L ‘mHAWK’ diesel engine in the Thar produces 130bhp of maximum power and a peak torque output of 300Nm. The 2.0L ‘mStallion’ petrol engine on the Thar produces a maximum power output of 150bhp and 300Nm of torque. Both the engines will be tuned differently and will produce slightly enhanced performance in the new Scorpio.

Mahindra Scorpio Tata Safari

Mechanically, the upcoming 2021 Tata Safari SUV will draw power from the same BS6 compliant Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that also powers the 5-seater Harrier SUV. The motor is good for 168 bhp of maximum power against 350 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options might include a 6-speed manual gearbox along with an optional 6-speed automatic torque converter.
