The micro-SUV segment does not have many competitors now but this may change soon. Both Tata and Hyundai are working on their micro-SUVs which are expected to launch by end of 2021. Both the SUVs have also been tested multiple times. While the Tata showcased the prototype of the car during the Auto Expo 2020, Hyundai has still not shown anything about the AX1. This time we do have some closeups of the new vehicle. The SUV is currently being tested on the International roads. The AX1 boasts squarish elements throughout the bodywork. The grille seems to be huge when compared to the overall size of the front of the car. It gets split headlamp design just like we have seen on the Venue. The turn indicator strip sits above and the headlamp sits in the lower half of the bumper.

In the spy shots, we can see that Hyundai is using a halogen bulb for the headlamp. We assume that on the higher variants the turn indicator strip might also double as an LED Daytime Running Lamps.

It is still not clear if Hyundai is using a stylized wheel cover or alloy wheels. Considering the price point, the manufacturer should use a stylized wheel cover. We can see the squarish windows. The side profile of the micro-SUV does resemble the Maruti Suzuki Ignis which is also marketed as an ‘Urban SUV’. The front door handle is placed at its conventional place, but the rear door handle has been placed between the C-pillar and the rear window. We can also see that Hyundai is not offering a shark-fin antenna with the AX1. From the rear, we can see tail lamps that are covered and high mounted stoplight.

Competition

The micro SUV segment is positioned below the compact SUV space and therefore it could target more volume-based customers wanting to own an affordable vehicle. The upcoming Tata Hornbill will also be a strong competitor. The vehicle gets a flat bonnet, an upright grille and a steep windshield. From the side profile, we can clearly see the tall boy design of the AX1. More about Hyundai Rs 5 lakhs SUV spy shots show new details below.

Engine and Performance

The car is expected to be based on the same K1 platform as the Santro, and could draw power from the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor as the Grand i10 Nios and the new-gen i20. On the i20, this powertrain belts out 81bhp power and 115Nm torque. The AX1 will likely be offered with a 5-speed manual transmission, as well as an optional automatic. Hyundai is expected to price the AX1 between Rs 5.5 – 8.5 lakh, which will make it the carmaker’s most affordable SUV offering in the Indian market. It will be slotted below the Venue in Hyundai’s line-up.
