Sometimes it is heart-wrenching to see Indian cars score better safety results in the overseas market. While the importance of human life is the same everywhere, strict laws in the global market and South Africa force automakers to provide better safety features.  Though India is slowly implementing safety laws we are still a long way from other countries in the competition. 1) Renault Kwid

This is one of the most controversial cars sold in the Indian market. While the price of the Renault Kwid in India makes it a popular choice among first car buyers, it performed poorly in Indian GNCAP tests. The Renault Kwid which is made in India and exported to South Africa with two airbags scored 2-star GNCAP rating. The protection offered to the driver head was adequate and passenger head showed good protection. Both necks showed good protection.

2) Maruti Ignis

Maruti Ignis is also quite a popular car from Maruti in India. Sold as Suzuki Ignis in South Africa, it scored 3-star safety rating in GNCAP for Africa.  The Suzuki Ignis comes with safety features like front-seat pre-tensioners, dual airbags, ISOFIX and 4-channel ABS. Luckily all the features are available in the Indian spec car as well. However the sheet metal quality of both the cars can be different. 3) Honda Amaze

This sub-compact sedan has been doing quite good in India. Tested in GNCAP for South Africa, the sedan scored 4-star safety rating.  The Honda Amaze in India also comes with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and side and front impact beams. The protection offered to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good. Driver and passenger’s chest showed adequate protection. 4) Toyota Yaris

Toyota cars are known for their reliability and performance. The Toyota Yaris was tested in 2018 by GNCAP Africa and scored 3-star safety rating. In India it comes with all the standard safety features from the base variant itself.  However readers should note that this was the hatchback variant of the car sold in Africa. Thus it should not be compared with the car sold in India. The protection offered to the driver and passenger head and neck was good. Driver chest showed marginal protection while passenger chest showed good protection.

5) Volkswagen Polo

Indians are slowly becoming obsessed with small turbo petrol hatchbacks. The Volkswagen Polo is one the earliest and the most famous competitor. When tested in 2017 in Africa, the Polo scored 3-star safety rating. The test car only had dual airbags and ABS. The protection offered to the driver and passenger head and neck was good. Driver’s chest received adequate protection and passenger chest received marginal protection. The Volkswagen Polo was also tested in India in 2014 which received 4-star safety rating.

6) Datsun Go+

Datsun Go+ when launched took India by storm by claiming to be the cheapest seven-seater. However the car was originally a 5+2 seater with the 2 seats for very small children. Thus the Datsun Go+ was a normal hatchback with better boot space after folding the third row. When tested in 2017 in Africa the Datsun Go+ scored 1-star safety rating with only one airbag. The Datsun Go+ now sold in India comes with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and front and side-impact beams.
