4×4 cars in India under Rs.40 lakh

We Indians love SUVs, be it muscular full-sized ones or be it the mid-size or sub-compact ones. However, those front-wheel-drive small-size SUVs do not have off-road capabilities and can be termed as pseudo Sport Utility Vehicle only. These pseudo SUVs are charming and very affordable but there are a lot of people who want to explore new places with their cars. For them, 4×4 SUVs are the real deal. 1) Mahindra Thar

Mahindra has recently launched the new-generation Thar. The new 2020 Mahindra Thar made its official debut on 15th August and now it has been finally launched. The new-generation Thar is powered by a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that churns out 150bhp of power and 320 Nm peak torque. It also gets a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that churns out 130bhp of power and 300 Nm of peak torque. Both the engines come mated to a 6-speed manual as well as a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission with 4X4 system as standard.

2) Jeep Compass

Jeep Compass is a very popular mid-size SUV in the Indian market. The Jeep Compass gets a BS6-compliant 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine that pumps out 160bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Compass also gets a 2.0-litre multi-jet diesel engine that churns out 169bhp of power and 350Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 9-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The diesel variants of the Compass get 4X4 drivetrain and Jeep also offers a very capable off-road-focused variant called Trailhawk. The BS6 Jeep Compass Diesel is priced between Rs. 17.99 lakhs – Rs. 24.99 lakhs (Rs. 27.60 lakhs for Trailhawk), Ex-showroom Delhi.

3) Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai recently launched the new Tucson Facelift in India. The Hyundai Tucson is offered with both petrol as well as diesel engine options. It gets a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that churns out 150bhp of power and 192Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox only. The Tucson Diesel is also a 2.0-litre unit that churns out 183bhp of power and 400Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to an 8-speed torque converter automatic gearbox and also gets 4WD. 4) Mahindra Alturas G4

Mahindra Alturas G4 was launched in India in the year 2018. It is one of the most affordable full-size SUVs currently on sale in the country. The Alturas G4 is powered by a BS6-compliant 2.2-litre diesel engine that churns out 178bhp of maximum power and a whopping 420Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox, sourced from Mercedes-Benz. The Alturas G4 is available in just two variants and the top model gets a proper 4×4 system for off-roading. The new 2020 Mahindra Alturas G4 BS6 is priced between Rs. 28.70 lakhs – Rs. 31.70 lakhs, Ex-showroom Delhi.

5) Ford Endeavour

Ford Endeavour is a very popular and a very capable full-size SUV. Recently, Ford India also launched the Sport Edition of the Endeavour. The new 2020 Ford Endeavour is powered by a new BS6-compliant 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine. This oil-burner churns out 169bhp of maximum power and 420Nm of peak torque and comes mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox. 6) Toyota Fortuner

Toyota Fortuner is one of the most loved and best-selling full-size SUVs in India. The Fortuner enjoys a cult status and has a huge fan-following. The new 2020 Toyota Fortuner is powered by a BS6-compliant 2.8-litre diesel engine that develops 176bhp of power and 420Nm of peak torque (450Nm for AT). The engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. The Fortuner also gets a 2.7-litre petrol engine that puts out 166bhp of power and 245Nm of torque and comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed AT. However, only the diesel variants of the Fortuner get 4WD and it has a TRD limited edition too.

7) Volkswagen Tiguan AllSpace

Volkswagen India launched the Tiguan AllSpace in the country early this year. The VW Tiguan AllSpace is a more practical seven-seater version of the (now discontinued) Tiguan. The Tiguan AllSpace is powered by a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine that churns out 189bhp of power and 320 Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Tiguan AllSpace also gets VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system and different riding modes.
