India’s largest car manufacturer – Maruti Suzuki stopped selling cars with diesel engines last year. The change that came due to the introduction of the BS6 emission norms in the Indian market may change next year and Maruti Suzuki may bring back the diesel engine in 2021. Maruti Suzuki had earlier announced a petrol-only portfolio during the transition to BS6 era due to the high costs associated in upgrading diesel engines to meet stringent emissions. But as the market is accepting diesels again, Maruti is planning to make a comeback. Here are expected Maruti Diesel cars in 2021?

New Engine

Maruti Diesel

The diesel engine that will make a comeback is Maruti Suzuki’s in-house-developed 1.5-litre unit in its BS6 iteration. Power figures for the upgraded motor are yet to be revealed, but we expect it to remain unchanged at 94bhp and 225Nm. This engine was offered with a 6-speed manual and we expect the same to continue as well. The company may also provide some form of automatic transmission with the diesel engine to address the rising demand in the market.

Maruti Vitara Brezza

brezza

Maruti Vitara Brezza before BS6 was a diesel-only SUV. However now it comes with a BS6 1.5-litre petrol engine. Maruti may also launch the new diesel engine with this SUV due to more demand. The compact-SUV segment has become highly competitive and popular where many people prefer diesel vehicles.

SUVs with big engines are not very impressive in fuel efficiency parameter, but the Maruti Brezza returns 18.76kmpl for the automatic variant and 17.03kmpl for the manual variant.  It is the only SUV in its segment with a mild hybrid system which assists the petrol engine in performance and also helps in great fuel efficiency. 138Nm of torque with the petrol engine promises you instant overtaking powers in highway and city roads. 103bhp of power also promises great overall performance.  The well-balanced gear ratios in both manual and automatic transmission promise fatigue-free driving.

Maruti Ertiga

Maruti Ertiga was also formerly available with the 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced diesel engine. If the Brezza diesel is successful, Maruti may also launch the same 1.5-litre diesel engine with the new Ertiga. The Maruti Ertiga is also highly used in the commercial market and diesel option will be very feasible. The Maruti Ertiga unlike Brezza does have S-CNG option for better fuel efficiency.

Maruti Ertiga

This 1462cc petrol engine produces 103bhp/6000rpm and 138Nm/4400rpm. You also get ARAI claimed fuel efficiency of 19.01km/l. The CNG engine option with Ertiga produces 91bhp/6000rpm and 122Nm/4400rpm. You also get 26km/kg of fuel efficiency with S-CNG. More about Expected Maruti Diesel cars in 2021 below.
