The Automobile industry is headed towards an electric revolution. Governments of various nations are already working hard to promote electric vehicles in their respective countries, thus reducing their overall carbon footprint, which includes India as well. With the improving EV infrastructure and consumers’ making a conscious, environment-friendly choice, there has been a surge in EV sales lately. And, Indian automakers are betting big on the segment. What are the expected upcoming electric cars in India?

1) Maruti WagonR EV

Maruti Suzuki officially declared in 2018 that they were testing India-made WagonR EV for launch around 2020. The prototypes were based on the Japanese-spec WagonR, which was launched in the Japanese market in 2017. There, it is available with a hybrid powertrain as well.  COVID may have delayed the launch but Maruti may now launch it soon.

In October 2018, the Indian carmaker had flagged-off the new WagonR-based EVs from its Gurugram facility, where they were manufactured. Maruti said that those EVs would be tested in various weathers and terrains and the data gathered from this would help the company in studying and successfully launching electric vehicle technology in India.

The specs of the eXUV300 are a mystery at the moment, but the driving range was confirmed by Mahesh Babu, MD & CEO, Mahindra Electric, to be around 375 km. Other reports also suggest that an entry-level version with lower driving range will also be introduced, focussed towards the urban buyers. The overall look of the SUV will remain quite same with some electric vehicle-like style adjustments.
