Honda City in its Hatchback form was seen testing a few months back in some Southeast Asian country. Now there is leaked information about the launch of 2021 Honda City hatchback. Will this car come to India? Is there a need for a Honda City Hatchback? What will it have if launched?
The leaked images show that the car is all set to be unveiled in Thailand first. Then it will be introduced to other ASEAN markets where the City brand is famous. Thailand has already got the RS spec Honda City which is expected in India for 2021.
On the leaked images there are 3 variants for the Hatchback. These include 1.0 TURBO S+, 1.0 TURBO SV and 1.0 TURBO RS. The 2021 Honda City Hatchback has been redesigned with a new rear design with wraparound LED taillights and bumper.
Apart from the design, the 2021 Honda City Hatchback will not have any other changes from the sedan version. All the other features on the Honda City will be carried over to the Honda City hatchback.
Now the Honda City Hatchback falls in the premium hatchback segment. In India, we already have the Honda Jazz which comes under Honda’s offering in this segment. Also, the Honda did not bring the facelift version of the Honda Jazz for India this year and just launched the old Jazz with a BS6 engine for 2020. If Honda brings the City hatchback to India it will sit above the Honda Jazz or it will replace it.
There is no confirmation of this nor has the car been spotted in India for testing. Also, Honda is already keeping the old generation City on sale along with the 5th generation. Having a City hatchback would not be a great idea as it would dilute the City name further.
Currently, Honda has a car in the premium hatchback segment. Also, the segment is tightly packed with at least one car from every manufacturer. The rivals include the Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz and newly launched Hyundai i20.
In terms of the new features offered on premium hatchback the 2021 Honda City hatchback fits right in place with all the modern features. So this would make for a great replacement for the Honda Jazz. But if Honda has seen some profit in keeping both the generations of the Honda city sedans on the the lineup then we might also see the Honda City Hatchback next to the Honda Jazz in the lineup.
