Maruti 800 was one of the most recognizable cars in India for a very long time. It was also the highest-selling car in the entry-level hatchback segment. It was cheap, small, easy to maintain; all the qualities for the perfect Indian small car. Currently, the Maruti Alto 800 sold in the Indian market is the current generation of the car, though not a worthy successor. Find out below about the Maruti 800 EV which packs a punch from Mahindra Scorpio.

More about the car

An electric vehicle specialist based in Pune, Hemank Dabhade was the driving force behind the Maruti 800 EV conversion. Northway Motorsport modified the Maruti 800 as an all-electric car with two-seat configuration and rear-wheel drive system.  EVs are known for their crazy torque figures and this car is no different. The Maruti 800 EV comes with 378Nm of torque while the Mahindra Scorpio with its 2179cc Diesel engine only manages to produce 320Nm of torque. Clearly, the Maruti 800 will be quicker off the line in a drag race due to a better power to weight ratio.

The driving range of this car is claimed to be about 150kms. It is perfect for an everyday city car of its size.  The Maruti 800 EV is also fitted with a custom touchscreen infotainment system which shows real-time specs of the car. You can find out about battery charge status, motor temperature, and lots of other important information. The project car also comes with HHA (Hill Start Assist), which helps keep the car stationary on a downward slope before it is accelerated.

More about the team

Dabhade and his team of Northway Motorsport have their project called, ‘Maruti 800 EV’ reaching its final stages. The team has also documented the whole process on a four-part video series on a YouTube channel.  The team has also converted Chevrolet Beat EV and Honda Activa EV.

More about the 800

Maruti 800 EV Scorpio

The last generation of the Maruti 800 which was sold in India came with a 796cc MPFi three-cylinder petrol engine. It was capable of producing 37hp and 59Nm of torque, nothing much impressive. The car also came with only a four-speed transmission. Maruti also sold a five-speed variant of the car which came with 47hp and 62Nm of torque.  The EV conversion of the car will significantly increase the price compared to its sibling.

Conclusion

Delhi Electric Policy

With the rising fuel prices, and new pollution policies EVs are only looking the way forward. India currently has four EV vehicles being sold as of now. The Tata Nexon EV is the most affordable of the options as of now. The entry-level hatchback segment has become quite competitive and demanding, thanks to competition. If Maruti decides to bring the 800 back in EV form, pricing it less than the Nexon will lead to much higher sales.
