Travel time is one of the major deciding factors of any journey. If the travel time is unnecessarily long, you end up tiring yourself before reaching the destination itself. Similar was the story for some parts of North India. But everything is about to change with a new highway under construction.

What is the news?

The NHAI also is known as the National Highway Authority of India has cleared an Rs.4,000 crore project. This project includes faster connectivity from Chandigarh to Ludhiana as said by a spokesperson from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.  This new project will be a part of the upcoming Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway. The main aim of these projects will be to reduce travel times and provide convenience to regular visitors.

What may the project change?

Route Before Project After Project
Ludhiana-Chandigarh 1.5 hour >1 hour
Delhi-Chandigarh 4 hour 2 hour
Delhi-Manali 14 hour 8 hour
Delhi- Amristar 8 hour 4 hour

The NHAI is also developing the 670-km Delhi-Amritsar-Katra greenfield expressway which would provide connectivity to Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Gurdaspur and Jammu under the ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojna.

What will the benefits include?

The proposed greenfield highway/ expressway will have a major impact in reducing travel to tourist/religious/industrial centres of northern India. The new project will also reduce the travel time between the different cities mentioned in the table above.
