What was the exception?
Supreme Court of India allowed carmakers to sell 10% of their unsold BS4 inventory. But now the government feels that the companies are creating and selling a lot more vehicles than permitted. The Government of India announced its exception on March 27 for 10 days.
The lockdown proved to be a major hurdle and they had to reschedule. Again the government gave an appropriate window to the dealers but they the dealer did not maintain integrity.
What is the current scenario?
On June 15, the Supreme Court ordered that no sale and registration of BS4 vehicles will be permitted herewith and strict action will be taken against any illegal methods. The Supreme Court has now ordered that new vehicles which have been sold will be registered but is keeping an eye out for any foul play.
How did the government come to know?
The government realized that dealers are selling their cars online and there is an unusual amount of new cars being sold during the lockdown in March. The government decided it was time to implement the rules strictly and take the rein on its own hand. Pollution wise BS6 is lower than BS4 but if the cost is justified or not is too early to tell.
